In class and HW Tues 10/23

Today we practiced writing equations modeling a data set using the supplied handout from last class. We first did another probe, practicing the procedures, then worked on the handout in class on pg. 14-15, #1,2,3.

In class Fri 10/19

Today in class we first looked at the data from the Bog Walk and collected the data papers. We then passed out the probe for writing an equation that acts as a model for the data set. Using the provided handout from Patterns of Change, we practiced using the equation y = a + bx, where a represents the y-intercept, the value for when x = 0, and b represents the rate of change or slope of the line. Using rise/run, or change in y or change in x, we were able write an equation which modeled the data collected from bungee apparatus using the data sheet.

In class Thurs 10/18

Today in class we began looking at relations and trends, introducing ordered pairs, plotting on scatterplots, graphing equations on the calculator, and creating tables of solutions. For homework use the packet pg. 87 and 88, #4 and 5.

Today we completed the write-up for the comparison of data set using dollars spent by states east and west of the Mississippi River.  After a short review, we started the assessment for Unit 1, Lessons 2 and 3 which will be completed next class, Wednesday, after the long weekend.

Today we first found the following summary statistics for data values from the packet on variation:
Mean (x-bar), Standard Deviation (s), Median, Interquartile Range (IQR = Q3-Q1),
Minimum, Lower Quartile (Q1, Median, Upper Quartile (Q3), Maximum,
Extremes/Outliers.
On your Calculator:  Stat key, choose Calc from the menu, then choose 1-Var Stats for whatever List you have data in, (e.g. L1 or L2) to get these values.
For homework, using the supplied handout, complete three parts comparing amounts spent by states on student education East and West of the Mississippi River:
1)  Write a paragraph for Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How concerning the context of the data presented.
2)  Produce a graph, either 2 boxplots,  back to back stem and leaf or histograms
3)  Compare the two distributions, looking for similarities and differences.
