In class and HW Wed 4/24

Today we examined how to factor out a greatest common factor (GCF) from a polynomial, factor a trinomial into two binomials, and factor a difference of squares. Use the website: http://www.purplemath.com/modules/factquad.htm for more explanations of these methods. Use pages A-38, A-39 (first 8 problems), and continue Thursday on A-40 to complete this work.

In class and HW Mon 4/22

Today we played some games applying factoring.  We played started by challenging for factors at:
http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=12 which is the Factor Game.  We then did polynomial bingo, did a puzzle quilt, then a who wants to be a millionaire type factor game at:
http://www.quia.com/rr/36611.html   Finally, we began to examine the features of various parabolas using the application at: http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/projectile-motion

In class and HW Thurs 4/11

Today we first took video clips of individual students shooting free-throws, uploaded to Google drive, and got them ready to import next class into LoggerPro to find the quadratic function describing each shot.  Afterwards we practiced multiplying binomials by binomials using the FOIL method using the handout B-30.  We will continue by factoring simple trinomials, which will continue after April vacation using the handout B-38 and B-39.

In class Tues 4/9

Today with the sub, students practice multiplying using the FOIL method after finishing the Egg Hurling problem handout.  To help watch the Khanacademy.org video on Factoring Quadratics, which is the topic coming up next.  Use the URL:

In class and HW Mon 4/8

Today we explored projectile motion using quadratic functions by calculating height of a thrown ball (softball and baseball).  We then worked on the egg hurling worksheet to find the highest and farthest thrown downfield eggs between the 3 teams.  Finally, in getting ready for factoring, we did multiplying of binomials by binomials (expansions) using FOIL method.

In class and HW Thurs 4/4

Today we began the unit on Quadratic Functions by examining the maximum, minimum, and zeros of various parabolas using the graphing calculator and also used the LoggerPro computer program to plot data and import videos and graphically show projectile motion (basketball free throw) then analyze and fit the curve.
